Why d?

A native of San Francisco, California, Young Dunn represents for his label Good Felons Muzik. “Who’s Why-D?” is Young Dunn’s first official solo mixtape. It’s a compilation of Hyphy, Soul and Swag drenched tracks; a strong demonstration of ambition and charm. His style, can best described as West Coast Lil’ Wayne with a splash of Rick Ross.

Dunn covers some of this year’s biggest songs including “Best I Ever Had” and “Successful”.  His singing flow and cleverly placed adlibs are entertaining and draw the listener into his intricate puns and wordplay. As far as content goes, “Who’s Why-D?” is filled with the typical money cash hoes but it’s Dunn’s delivery that distinguishes him from the pack. He bodies tracks like “Bang Bang”, “Wet” and Last of a Dying Breed”. “Bang Bang” is a great opening to a mixtape. It’s a warning track for the haters. Here, Dunn drops crazy metaphors complimented by a fast-paced and dramatic beat. Dunn’s flow is impressive. “Wet” is a track you will “go dumb” to. It has that genuine Bay feeling to it and a hook you won’t forget. Dunn has a hit with this one. “Last of a Dying Breed” is a little more introspective for Young Dunn. Dunn raps, full of hope “Here’s a toast to the future…”.  Who’s Why-D? If you wanna know, cop the mixtape!!

Take a walk with Oddessey The Prince…

Oddessey The Preparation

Tavaris Lundy was born December 31st, 1982 in Jackson, Mississippi. In the 7th grade, Tavaris had a dream that he heard thousands of people chanting “Oddessey” while cheering him on stage. He immediately looked up the word to find its meaning; an epic journey, written long ago. As a result, Oddessey, the artist was born. They say “Success is where preparation and opportunity meet”. Oddessey has without a doubt crafted a remarkable piece of work in “The Preparation”. As far as success goes, the opportunity is his for the taking.

“The Preparation” is a fast-paced mix tape filled with positive messages. Oddessey has an intense, passionate flow that he switches up constantly throughout the mix tape. Consider him the T.I.P. of Gospel hip hop. The hunger in his voice is paralleled only by his apparent love for God. Oddessey masterfully covers popular hip hop tracks such as “One Blood” and “Swagger like Us” on this compilation. Stand out tracks on “The Preparation” include “Lake of Fire” and “For God I Live”. “Lake of Fire” is a energetic track led by a powerful guitar riff and ingenious chorus: “You don’t wanna see the lake of fire boy/ Ay man it’s hot off in Hell and dats no lie boy/ You don’t wanna see the lake of fire boy/ Don’t wanna keep doin’ wrong and be a Hot Boy”. In the verse, Oddessey raps “When I heard about Christ, it made me wanna get it right/ If I slip and I fall, look I’m getting back up/ Cuz I really gotta make it even though the road rough”. “For God I Live” is for the hood. Here, Oddessey explains that instead of dying over a color or a rag he would rather live and die for God. Oddessey touches on topics people don’t want to talk about. He delivers these messages with biblical metaphors over tough southern beats.

Oddessey has a bright future ahead of him. A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step; take a walk with Odessey…

Yung Image, My Introduction To The World

…And now without further a due, I present “Rude Boy Fresh” Yung Image. His debut mixtape entitled “My Introduction to the World” allows listeners to indulge in his music while getting to know him. “My Introduction to the World” is lyrically ingenious with amazing production. The beats are a delicate blend of his Hip Hop, Reggae and Soca influences.

“My Introduction to the World” captivates its audience with memorable hooks and bass bumping beats. Cuts such as “Rude Boy Fresh” and “Trouble on the Dance Floor” show a keen ability to be playful and creative. “Rude Boy Fresh” is the ultimate swagger anthem. It combines Hip-Hop attitude and that relaxed Reggae feel. “Trouble on the Dance Floor” motivates the ladies to get loose and have fun. However, Yung Image is not a one trick pony. “My Introduction to the World” also gets very personal. His single “Voices in My Head“ is a deep, chaotic song that allows you to listen to a killer’s thoughts, but they are just that, vivid thoughts. These feelings were provoked by Yung Image’s father in his childhood. Image’s talents never cease to amaze on this compilation. In addition to a dozen original works produced by Da Collectiv, he shines on covers such as “Straight Gunshot” and the “Nuh Linga” remix. Image “owns” these riddims and almost makes you forget their forerunners.

Get to know Yung Image! His music speaks for itself. “My Introduction to the World” is praised as a masterpiece by his colleagues, disk jockeys, selectors and producer DJ Gunz. If this is his introduction, we don’t ever want to say goodbye. Hello World, I introduce to you, Yung Image!!

Empire Isis Album Review: “Brand New Style”

Empire Isis Brooklyn collectiv Review

Don’t hate….. Participate

Empire Isis second album “Brand New Style” is definitely making people talk. So many elements in this album come together in unison to make it memorable. Something that definitely stood out to me was her alluring personality. It really shines through her lyrics and vibe. I found most of Empire Isis’s lyrics to be witty and complimenting to the beats. Empire Isis’s catchy hooks kept me entertained throughout the album. I loved the production on “Brand New Style”. It was well mixed creating a perfect balance. The beats bass bumping with amazing melodies. Whether its chill music or party bangers, “Brand New Style has it. With music like this its no wonder that Empire Isis’s music has been featured in 8 shows, including MTV’s The Hills.

Standout songs on this album are Participate, Wont Surrender, and Four in the Morning. Participate is full of energy coming from the lyrics and the beat. I can see Participate becoming an anthem because anyone can relate to the song. Everyone has haters. I loved the beat in wont Surrender because it was sexy to me. I also liked Empire Isis’s swagger on 100 flow. The lyrics on Four in the Morning are insane. Empire Isis really gets deep on this one. Also add the killer guitar solo close to the end and you got an amazing track. Spitting through stereotypes, Empire Isis is proving to the world that she is a force top be reckoned with.

At the End of the Day They Will Remember Our Name: ECOMOG

808s & ECOMOG

Ecomog claims to be changing Hip-Hop and with their latest album “808s and Ecomog”, I believe they are doing just that. This album is based on Kanye West’s 808s and Heartbreaks hence the name. It was impressive to hear how this talented group used sampled pieces from Kanye West’s album. They managed to turn the samples into their own songs and “own it”. I felt they were on point with every song and there was never a dull moment. Ecomog’s style is very unique from what is out today in Hip-Hop. It’s Hip Hop with a pop rock feel. Ecomog brings the element of storytelling to the table as well. They know how to set the tone and atmosphere in order to include their listeners. Standout songs include “We Can Dance” and “Bad News”.

The lyrics on “We Can Dance” are very entertaining to me. “Go skinny girl with yo baggy thong” perfect example. “We Can Dance” is full of energy and gives off a great vibe. I thought this song stood out because it gave a different feel from the rest of the album. It’s a very playful upbeat song. With the song “Bad News” I thought they did an amazing job with the storytelling. The lyrics compel you to continue listening. Their tone throughout the song allows you to feel what they are going through. Once again they did a remarkable job with the lyrics.

Ecomog is without doubt a making some changes. “The group consists of Entity, Epidemic, Confucius, and Shizz; 4 individuals that have perfected their craft whether it be lyricism, production, or engineering, aiming to bridge the gap between mainstream and the underground. ECOMOG… changing hip-hop.” I couldn’t of said it better!

RDG - The Beginning

rdg - the beginning

This is only The Beginning……

RDG’s debut album, The Beginning, proves to be the life of the party. I found the beats to be very infectious. Listening to the album made me want to either bob my head or dance. Another key factor is the way the album was mixed. In my opinion I felt the tracks were well mixed and nothing felt out of place. You can also feel amazing energy throughout the album. The energy allows the listener to enjoy the album without getting bored and on the dance floor it just keeps you going. Standout songs include Shawty Bad and Just Walked Up.

Girls love a song where the guy is bragging about how some girl looks or acts. The female listeners can then claim the song as if the song was about them. With Shawty Bad I can definitely see that happening. Shawty Bad is also well produced with the lyrics and beat that mixed well. Walked Up is a grandstand anthem. Listeners can relate to going to the club and people” straight hating”. The cocky lyrics that RDG spits, made this song what it is. The beat on this song is not as amped as the others but still full of energy. Both these songs have nice melody in the background. In my opinion judging by the album and numbers on myspace, RDG is definitely on the rise. Remember folks, this is only The Beginning.

Purchase songs off Best of A.P. on amazon.com now Suppose 2 be,Eye Stays So Fly, In the Matrix, Computer Bug, For a Reason and many more!

-Jae Cy

AP “Da Body’s“ latest mixtape is correctly titled The Best of AP 2008. Throughout the mixtape you get familiar with his personality. His confidence and witty punch lines snatch your attention and don’t let go until the end. Another key element is how he talks each song out. By doing this, listeners feel as if AP is talking directly to them and builds a connection. Also, all the smack he talks is hilarious to listen to. The beats are crazy and they are produced and mixed by Da Body himself. I also found AP’s music to be very melodic. Whether its your head nodding or letting your body sway, listeners can vibe either way. Also be sure to check his swagger on Brooklyn Collectiv’s grandstand anthem, “You Need Me”, found on this site. Standout songs on “The Best Of…“ include “Suppose To Be” and “N Da Matrix”.

“Suppose to Be” sends out the positive message to do what you do and don’t worry about no one else. I am sure a lot of people have experienced a little hate in their lives ,so this song just encourages you to keep striving. The beat and the lyrics set an incredible vibe and give you that “can do” attitude. “Ya cant mess with my crew Da Body”. “N Da Matrix“, is his powerful crew anthem. AP rocks the mic ready for war on this song. He gets on the mic and you FEEL his presence.

AP is definitely an artist to look out for!! He is on the rise with about 1,700,000 plays on Myspace and so many videos and so many views on Youtube, I like to let numbers do the talking.

And now for our Feature Presentation ………

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

-Jae Cy
When it comes to special attractions, you can take PHZ-Sicks and add him to your list. His new mixtape The Feature Presentation gives you a variety of songs to choose from. He can switch his flow from mellow to fast in the same song. PHZ-Sicks seems to be different and in some ways a breath of fresh air. In The Feature Presentation you can also find remixes to “Mrs. Officer”, “Jumpin out the Window”, and Ciara’s “Work”. Standout songs include “Jazzi Belle” and “Yes”.

Fellas listen up; a sweet dedication to the ladies is at your reach. In the song “Jazzi Belle” PHZ-Sicks goes in smooth and tailors the song around this girl. This song was mixed very well and his lyrics add a sense of devotion. Another attribute to this song is the emotion and feeling he adds to his flow. For a street anthem you can definitely blast “Yes” in you radio. It is a swagger based song with several punch lines. I would give you a few, but I rather have you tune into The Feature Presentation.

Perfekt & Chance: Remember The Name

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

Jae Cy
Take attitude, an infectious flow, and ingenious lyrics and you have created a bully, a bully to underground music that is. Their new mixtape Return of Da Bully definitely demands attention and intimidates their competition. The production is well composed and the choruses are melodic. They have a variety of music that goes from soft songs catered to the ladies to bass bumping tracks.

Standout songs included “I Need You Home” and “Look at the Stars”. “I Need You Home” is a cute song about missing that special someone. It adds a nice vibe to the mixtape and has a catchy hook. The deep and tragic song, “Look at the Stars”, brings light to issues that have been overlooked in our communities. Their thought provoking lyrics are reminiscent to Ludacris’ Runaway Love.

Also kudos to DJ Chubby Chub for keeping it entertaining throughout the whole mixtape. These are definitely some guys to look out for because they “spit fire while the rest just breathe hot air.”

Game on, 8-Bit Boys!

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Jae Cy
About 70% of Americans play video games on a regular day basis. No surprise here, so do the 8-Bit Boys! Their latest album 8-Bit Diagrams, is a clever combination of original beats, lyrics, and video game soundtracks. From the album cover to their songs, the theme remains consistent throughout the whole album. Consistency can be interpreted as either creative or lazy when it comes to albums. In this case, I believe it was creative. Gamers can relate to songs like “8-Bit Blisters” and “Controller Hog”. 8-Bit Blisters is about literally playing the game until it hurts. Lyrically they go into detail about the pain, burns, and what they used to nurse their wounds and blisters. Both singles are insanely humorous and paint a picture that the listener can envision. The 8-bit boys also shine when it comes to their flow and the amount of energy in their tracks.

The production on this album was precise. In several songs the beat would change slightly to introduce a new person. By practicing this, it allows the song to remain fresh until the end. Another element they used was balance. They manage to find a perfect balance between the music and the game beats. The video game soundtracks never overpowered the song unless it was done intentionally.

Standout songs are Gangster Gamer, Silent Infiltration, and 8 Bit Party. Ganster Gamer is a funny interpretaion of actual events that happened last year with game consoles. People were robbed for their systems and the money they had to buy one. I find this song humorous(another word for humor) because of  their delivery, lyrics, and the reporter that gives announcements in between the verses. In the begining of Silent Infiltration, the 8-Bit Boys are setting up a mission. This Metal Gear Solid based song has each person playing a role. They even include Metal Gear Solid’s character Snake to the intro. The whole song gives a feel as if you were in the game with them. As for Party Starter, just press play to 8 BIt Party. The beat, hook and flow allows anyone to get their 2 step on. Very different from the other songs 8 Bit Party is not so focused on the video games.  The ambiance is still there, but its more tailored to a party joint.

8 Bit Boys are playing the game and playing it well. Who knows with the success from this album, maybe The 8-Bit Boy video game is in the near future!
